The South East Technology University (SETU) was established in 1970 and was formed on 1 May 2022 through the merger of Carlow Institute of Technology and Waterford Institute of Technology. Bringing together the experience and strengths of both institutions—each with over 50 years’ history in higher education, research, innovation and internal and external collaboration—SETU is based in the south-east of Ireland and is committed to becoming a leading European university of technology.
SETU has campuses in Carlow, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow and Kilkenny in the south-east of Ireland. The university currently has over 18,000 students and 1,500 staff members, and plans to increase its student numbers to 25,000 and its staff to 2,000 over the next ten years.
SETU brings together more than 550 active researchers from Carlow Institute of Technology and Waterford Institute of Technology, alongside nine research centres, one research institute and four technology and innovation hubs, spanning a wide range of disciplines including design research, engineering innovation, applied materials research, biopharmaceuticals, molecular biotechnology, software and computing, information and communications technology, and sports and health.
