The University of Applied Sciences in Mittweida traces its origins to a technical engineering college established in 1867 and the Royal Engineering Academy in Roswein, making its history span more than 140 years. In 1935, the institution was officially renamed the “Mittweida Engineering College,” and in 1976, it officially became one of Germany’s public universities; in 1980, it formally established a doctoral program. In 1992, the institution was renamed “Mittewed University of Technology and Economics.” In 1998, it was renamed “Mittewed University of Applied Sciences.” In 2000, it was selected by the German Rectors’ Conference as “Germany’s University of the Year 2000,” solidifying its status as a higher education institution with a long-standing tradition.
Over its more than 130-year history of education, the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences has produced more than 70,000 qualified graduates, many of whom have gone on to become founders, senior executives, and outstanding scientists and engineers at world-renowned companies—a source of great pride for both the university and its students. For example:
- August Horch, founder of Audi
- Walter Bruch, communications technology expert and inventor of the PAL television standard
- Bernhard Schmidt, pioneer of the reflecting optical telescope
The university’s first president was Mr. Carl Georg Weitzel, a renowned engineer from Mannheim. As an outstanding educator and engineer, President Weitzel clearly articulated that future industrial development would require engineers possessing both exceptional theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience. Under President Weitzel’s leadership, the university of technology established state-of-the-art applied laboratories and, in 1884, founded what was then Germany’s most advanced Department of Electronics.
The “Print Hochschule Mittweida Dokument Urkunde” consists of the university’s logo, a patterned background, the text of the certificate, Signature, and the corresponding blue ink seal. When I successfully completed my studies and received my diploma, I felt that all my hard work had been worth it!
Thanks to its extensive range of academic programs and rigorous teaching standards, Mittweida University of Applied Sciences has consistently ranked among the top universities in Germany. For example, in 2004, Mittweida University of Applied Sciences ranked first in the Saxony state-wide evaluation of academic programs. In the 2005 program rankings, the university’s Social Welfare program achieved fifth place nationwide and first place in East Germany.
